Teaching Reading in Poor Communities in Jakarta (Project Update Q3 24)

by Stuart Patience (Board Member) | 2 Aug 2024

We’re excited to share another update on our work in Indonesia, especially in poorer urban areas.

Setback We want to be honest: we hoped to run a training session for 15 teachers in Jakarta by now, but it was postponed due to school holidays. However, this gave us time to connect with potential partners for the next session.

Street children Meanwhile, we trained teachers working with street children in Malang, providing them with training, books, and materials. Supporting educators in poorer urban areas is key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Research This year, we aim to study reading levels in one of Jakarta's poorer areas. We hope this data helps us gain insights and secure more funding, as urban areas need support too!

Thank you for your continued support in helping us train more teachers and reach more children!

Support teachers in remote Eastern Indonesia (Project Update Q3 24)

by Stuart Patience (Board Member) | 2 Aug 2024

We’re excited to share another update from Eastern Indonesia!

This is a special one, as we just celebrated the end of Phase 1 of our project in Kupang, NTT: Pesta Literasi (The Literacy Celebration).

Pesta Literasi
In June, we brought together children, teachers, and government officials to celebrate the progress made this year. Our data shows significant improvements in partner schools compared to others, a great reason to celebrate! Including local officials helped us showcase our impact and strengthen our partnership for future work in Kupang and beyond.

New program preparations
Thanks to this partnership, we’re launching a new intervention in another district in East Indonesia, starting with 8 new schools. We’ll train teachers in Saya Suka Membaca materials and provide books to nurture a love for reading.

Your donations make this possible. Thank you so much! Please share our work with others who might want to help!

Teach 3,000 Indonesian Children to Read (Project Update Q3 24)

by Stuart Patience (Board Member) | 17 June 2024

We want to thank you for your ongoing support, which helps us train more teachers and inspire a love for reading among Indonesian children.

Update on Sabu, Kupang, and Kalimantan
We had hoped to start a project in Sabu (NTT) this year, but we haven’t yet met the funding goals to move forward. Still, we’re optimistic about the connections made with local governments for future projects. Meanwhile, new partnerships in Kupang (NTT) and Kalimantan have allowed us to train over 40 teachers and introduce our materials to many children.

Training in Malang
We recently trained 16 teachers in Malang (Java), including those working with street children and in remote villages. It’s inspiring to see our materials used where they are needed most!

Expanding Our Network
We’d love your help in connecting with others who might support our literacy efforts. Thank you again for your support!

Ayo! Suka Membaca!
