Filling A Knowledge Gap
by Sarochinee Unyawachsumrith | 14 July 2024
In our teenage years, we were clueless about our futures after graduating from public high schools. Decades later, we saw the same disconnect in students at workshops in northeast Thailand in June. Supported by Anderson Foundation, over half of the nearly 600 girls we polled didn't know what they wanted to do or how to achieve their aspirations post high school. Through 'Better Me' For Girls workshops, we provided tools to manage their future, career path guidance, and higher education options. The response was highly positive, and teachers urged us to return. We hope for continued support to cover more ground.
Thriving Through Adversity

Former Pratthanadee student Teang Polraksa developed resilience from her childhood in rural Khon Kaen, tending buffalo and foraging for food. At 13, she moved to Bangkok, earning 300 baht monthly at a garment factory, sending 200 home. After an arranged marriage at 21, she returned to Bangkok with her baby, working as a housekeeper until health issues forced her to retire. Joining Pratthanadee in 2003, she learned English, goal-setting, and First Aid, once saving a child’s life. Now happily retired, Teang fondly remembers the support from her classmates and teachers, crediting them for her success.
From Ubon to Washington DC
by Sarochinee Unyawachsumrith | 11 September 2023
July was a whirlwind. In a few weeks, my team and I visited over 10 schools, reaching more than 2,000 high school girls in northeast Thailand, including Ubon province. We trained, distributed self-learning kits, and collected data on gender-based violence. Barely catching my breath, I flew to Washington DC, starting a three-week trip arranged by the US Embassy in Thailand. Visits included Des Moines, Manchester, Detroit, and Seattle. As part of the US State Department’s IVLP exchange on NGO management, I learned from American counterparts, gaining skills in donor management, community engagement, and social media. The trip was also filled with cultural experiences and new connections. Renewed, I returned home, ready to improve Pratthanadee. Thanks to the US Embassy and partners!
